Hey, I went to bennet springs today with my dad to try to catch some trout. We weren't using our fly poles but we were using flies.
We got up at 5:30 AM to get there early before there was a lot of people there, and we went on a wednesday so we could get a good fishing spot on the river. We left the house at 6:00 AM, it was an hour drive to get there. We got there at 7:00 Am and noticed that there were already a lot of people fishing there and some of them had 2 or 3 trout on their stringer, there is no way that they started fishing at 7:00 when the fishing opened.
But anyway, we finally got into the river with our waders at about 7:15. I used a buck-tail bass fly, it was white. My dad was using a yellow fly with a spinner attached. He caught a fish on his first cast, it was a rainbow about 12 inches long, he kept it. Then I took many casts before I even got a hit, and when the fish hit my lure, they didn't get it into their mouth so I could set the hook, they just got the haired pairt at the end. I took my scisors and cut some of the hair off so the hook would be exactly in line with the hair.
I threw my lure a few more times and finally got a fish, it was a brown trout, it was too small to keep so I threw it back. I caught another brown trout right after that, it was also too small. Then I finally got my 1st rainbow of the day and tried to put it on my stringer, but somehow, I got off the stringer, after it was tied on, that made me kinda mad.
I wasn't able to catch many more fish ultil about 10:00, right before I left to go home. I used a green buck-tail fly, and I fished for a while and caught 2 more rainbow trout and kept them, they were both about 12 inches long. But then, just as we were about to leave, I saw the biggest trout of my life, I wasn't able to catch it, it was about the size of an average sized salmon (about 3 feet), it was a brout trout and I couldn't get it to bite my lure, I casted about 20 times right by it and caught a few more smaller trout, but nothing else big.
I went home and cleaned the fish, the gear, and myself, then fell asleep on my couch while watching TV. I was tired, I went to bed at 12:30 Am and woke up at
5:30 AM, i got hardly any sleep. I was suppose to eat the trout for dinner but I got buisy shooting my bow for archery season, so I'm just going to eat them tomarrow.
And just to let all of you know, I was fishing in Zone 1, between the very beginning of the river and the 1st dock thing that goes out into the water that people fish on. I was close to the dock, I fished both sides of the river, it was the back side that I saw the huge brown trout at.
